Lost something at a Korean hotel? How to get it back
Left an item in your hotel room or lobby in Korea? Contact the front desk or housekeeping of the specific property. Here's how hotel lost & found works and what to say.
Hotel lost & found is handled per property — by the front desk, guest services or housekeeping of the hotel you stayed at. There is no chain-level or national desk to escalate to, which makes the first call matter more here than almost anywhere else.
Contact the property, not the brand
Call or email the front desk / guest services of that specific hotel, with your room number, stay dates and a clear description of the item. Housekeeping usually logs items found during cleaning. Major chains are in the hotels directory.
Ask two things on the first call
How long they will hold it, and whether they can ship it to you — most will, at your cost. Get a tracking number.
Call before the room is turned over
Contact the hotel as soon as you realise. The sooner housekeeping is alerted, the more likely the item is set aside rather than swept in with the rest of the room. Referencing your reservation speeds things up.
Hotels keep things longer than people assume
A hotel is not working to the handover timetable that transport operators follow. Many keep unclaimed property in a store room for months, and they do not always pass items to the police at all — which cuts both ways. It means an item may never appear in the police system. It also means the hotel is worth asking again weeks later, even if you were told on the day that nothing had been found.
When you ask again, ask for the store room and the housekeeping log to be checked, not just the front desk's own record. A "no" on the day of checkout is frequently a "no" about the desk log rather than about the building.
If it was handed to the police
Some properties do pass unclaimed items on, in which case the item appears in Police Minwon24 (formerly LOST112) at minwon24.police.go.kr. How to search it is in the police lost & found guide.
Two caveats. Nothing appears there for days after a handover. And it is registered where it was handed in — the district police station that received it — which may be some distance from the hotel.
If Korean is the barrier
1330 is Korea's tourist help line, run by the Korea Tourism Organization. It is free, answers 24 hours a day, and offers interpretation in English, Japanese, Chinese and other languages.
It is not a lost & found office — it holds no items and keeps no database. What it does is interpret, including on a three-way call with a hotel front desk or a police station, and explain what a Korean-language page or notice actually says. Smaller properties often have no English-speaking staff, which is exactly where this bites.
If the item is located but you cannot collect it in person — you have left Korea, or the hotel is hours away — it can be released to someone acting for you with written authorization and their own ID, and shipping abroad is arranged by whoever collects it: here's what that takes.
Already left Korea?
Hotels hold forgotten items for the guest to collect, and shipping abroad is decided by each property. If you have already flown home, this is the order that works:
- Confirm with the front desk that they have the item. Ask for a photo and where it is being kept.
- Ask whether they will ship it abroad. If they will, they will tell you the cost and how to pay.
- If they won't, ask what they need to release it to someone you authorize — usually a signed authorization from you and a copy of your ID.
- We collect it from the hotel and ship it to you, wherever you are.

Hotel lost & found: questions travellers ask
- Will a hotel in Korea ship a forgotten item to me abroad?
- It depends on the property. Each hotel sets its own policy, even within a chain, and many only hold items for collection. Ask the front desk directly. If they won't ship, someone you authorize can collect it and send it on.
- How long do Korean hotels keep lost items?
- Each hotel decides, and few publish a period. Where a hotel's official page states one, our directory entry for that hotel shows it. Contact the hotel as soon as you notice the loss. If an item is passed to the police, it can be searched on Police Minwon24.
- What should I tell the hotel when I contact them?
- The name on the booking, your room number, check-in and check-out dates, the booking reference, and a precise description of the item: brand, colour, size and where in the room you last had it. A photo helps.
- Can someone else pick up my item from the hotel?
- Usually yes, with your written authorization. Ask the front desk exactly what they need to release it to a third party; a signed authorization and a copy of your ID are the usual request. We can be that third party and ship the item to you.
- The hotel says they don't have it. What now?
- Ask them to check with housekeeping and the laundry, and whether anything was handed to the police. Then search Police Minwon24 for a few days, and think about the rest of your route: taxi, airport bus, subway, the airport.
- Do I need to speak Korean to contact the hotel?
- Not always. Many front desks in tourist areas handle English, and an email gives you a written record. If you get stuck, Korea's 1330 tourist line, run by the Korea Tourism Organization, can help with interpretation.
