How to recover a lost item in a Korean taxi

Left your phone, wallet, or bag in a taxi in Korea? Here's exactly how to trace the driver and get it back — by transport card, license plate, or Kakao T — plus the police Lost112 portal.

Leaving something in a taxi feels hopeless — you don't know the driver, the company, or where the cab went next. In Korea, though, there are a few reliable ways to trace the exact taxi and get your item back, often within a day. Here's what to do, fastest routes first.

Act fast and gather what you remember

Recovery odds drop the longer you wait, so start now. Jot down:

  • Roughly when and where you got in and out
  • How you paid — transport card, credit card, or cash
  • The license plate, if you have it (a photo of the receipt or plate is gold)

The fastest route: trace by your payment card

Korean taxis log every card tap, so the card issuer can look up the exact taxi and driver for you.

  • T-money card: call 1644-1188, follow the ARS menu (press 3), and enter the card number you paid with. You'll get the taxi company and driver's contact by text.
  • Cashbee card: call 1644-1472 and do the same.

Full steps: Trace a taxi by your T-money or Cashbee card.

Booked through an app? Use the ride record

If you hailed the cab with Kakao T, your trip history has everything needed to identify the car and reach the driver through support. See How to recover an item from a Kakao T taxi.

Have the plate number? Call the taxi association

If you noted the license plate, call the Seoul Private Taxi Association at 1544-7771 and they can give you the driver's mobile number.

Still no luck? Check Lost112

Once a driver hands in an unclaimed item — or after a short holding period — it's registered on Lost112, the national police lost-and-found portal, where you can search by date, area, and item type.

How long do you have?

Move within the first day or two. Drivers usually notice items during cleaning at the end of a shift; unclaimed items are later turned in to police and appear on Lost112. The sooner you trace the car, the more likely it's still with the driver.

Don't want to make the calls in Korean?

Every step above assumes you can navigate Korean-language phone menus and staff — or that you're still in the country. If that's a barrier, we can do it for you: trace the taxi, recover the item, and ship it anywhere. Contact numbers for each service are in the taxi directory.
